This summer, I was asked to write primer on menopause for Portland Monthly's Women's Health Annual. Though I'm a decade away from experiencing "The Change" myself, I will be well equipped when the time comes. ;-) A few surprising facts:
• Hormone Therapy does not cause breast cancer—it may promote a tendency for cancer that may already be preprogrammed.
• When you start Hormone Therapy matters. The average age of women in the WHI study was 63. That is, they started HT ten years after the average age of menopause. When they reanalyzed the WHI data, they found that there was a trend in cardiovascular protection for women who started HT right when they started menopause.
• Local estrogen is a good thing. I won't go into all the details but read my story if you want to know more!
